Can I earn money with citizen's income?
Yes, citizen's allowance can also be drawn on your own income if this is not sufficient to cover your living costs. To make work worthwhile, there are Additional income limits and Allowanceswhich are not counted towards the citizen's allowance.
What allowances are there?
✔ De minimis limit: Revenue up to 50 € per month remain free of charge.
✔ Volunteering: Expense allowances are exempt up to a certain amount.
✔ Pupil & student jobs: Are no longer recognised.
✔ Education allowance: Higher than with Hartz IV in the past.
✔ Parental allowance: Up to 300 € remain free of charge.
Qualifying income for the Citizen's Income
The job centre takes into account, among other things:
Wages from work (self-employed or employed)
Rental income (except to cover own housing costs)
Maintenance for children & partner
Capital income & pensions (e.g. injury pension)
One-off income (e.g. Christmas bonus, tax refund)
Non-calculated income
Certain income is not taken into account, e.g:
✔ Inheritances (since 1 July 2023)
✔ Blindness benefit & care allowance
✔ Basic pensions under the Federal Pension Act
✔ Pocket money for federal voluntary service (up to €250)
